Community Kids Cessnock is a brand new purpose built located in the centre of town. Our centre welcomes families from 6:30am to 6:00pm and has a large, natural outdoor play spaces that are supported by natural and inviting indoor rooms.
Children learn in many different ways and at different times, as a result we have ensured that our environments have reflected this, enabling children of all ages to interact and learn from each other in the one space. We provide children with indoor/outdoor play, this means that children have choice and can exercise a sense of agency to be able to play in an environment that suits their needs and interests. Our indoor environment is arranged to cater for children based upon developmental stages, creating a more productive learning environment.
We provide morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and breakfast for those early starters at the centre before 8:00am. For convenience of busy families, we provide nappies, wipes and bedding.
We pride ourselves on providing the highest quality education and care, with our Educators programming and planning to support and extend on your child’s interests and needs. Our Educators engage with the Early Years Learning Framework, which describes the principles, practices and outcomes that support and enhance young children’s learning from birth to five years of age. We treat each child as an individual, possessing their own set of strengths and interests.
We aim to develop each child not only for school, however to be a life long learner, acquiring dispositions for learning such as confidence, persistence, resilience, getting along and organisation and empowering each child to have active participation in their learning and the day to day decisions at our centre. We also run a transition to school program in both preschool rooms.
We look forward to you beginning your journey with Community Kids Cessnock!
My name is Kassie Smith and I am the Centre Manager of Community Kids Cessnock. I am so honoured to be part of such a naturally beautiful setting, that was purposefully built to provide engaging and quality learning experiences for children.
I graduated from Newcastle University in 2010 with a double degree in Primary and Early Childhood Education. I have taught in numerous educational settings ranging from preschools to long daycare services, teaching in Primary Schools and also lecturing in Educational Leadership at the University of Newcastle. I have taught a variety of age groups ranging from birth to the age of 12.
The importance of early childhood ranges beyond ‘preparing children for school’, it encompasses developing children as lifelong learners – ‘when you teach what you love and share what you know, you open eyes, minds, hearts and souls to unexplored worlds’. Here at Community Kids, we value children as lifelong learners and as such aim to engage children in a range of child-centred, hands-on, play based experiences in conjunction with intentional teaching practices that assist in developing lifelong learners.
I am also extremely passionate about children’s citizenship – developing children’s sense of agency, which is assisting children to understand that they have the rights and capacities to lead and initiate decision making practices that affect them. Children learn by asking questions and they develop better if parents and teachers listen to them and encourage them to express themselves. Children are also capable and competent and can actively construct their own learning.
All children are unique and possess different skill sets, strengths, abilities and interests. As a result, children need to be recognized as individuals and it is our role as early childhood educators to spend the time getting to know each child and develop secure and trusting relationships, to enable each child access to achieving the best possible outcomes. I believe that this is the best part of being an early childhood educator, developing long lasting relationships with children and their families, watching children grow and develop and engaging families in the decision making process.
I believe in quality education, a set of high standards that is embedded in everything that we practice, teach and believe, that occurs every minute of every day. All children have the right to access quality education, especially when the early years between the ages of birth and five are the most significant time in a child’s life.
