Centre Manager - Community Kids Victoria Point

“The way we teach children now, extending on the children’s interest, going natural rather than plastic and sustainability practices teaches the children to look after the planet.”

I began my career in early childhood education and care in 1999 and started working at Community Kids Victoria Point in 2006. I hold an Advanced Diploma in Children’s Services, Certificate III in Health Support Services and a Diploma in Management. I started out as an Assistant, moving up to Lead Educator, then up to Centre Manager and took on a 6-month contract as an Area Manager. I love being a Centre Manager and have been back doing that for nearly 20 years.

I always had a love for children, but I left school and became a Lighting Consultant. This was not my passion and I knew something was missing. I met a friend of mine who was a Director at a childcare centre and she introduced me to the world of working with children. I have never looked back. I loved my job, it was always a priority, my children had to be happy and have fun, my parents had to trust me to look after their babies and were never worried about leaving them with me. Now as a Centre manager I instil those same values in my staff and we now have children who attended the centre 15 years ago enrolling their own children just to be with us. It is quite surreal.

I have learnt that over the past 20 years things have changed and for the better. The way we teach children now, extending on the children’s interest, going natural rather than plastic and sustainability practices teaches the children to look after the planet. Children are so much more developed these days and the things they know and say to me blow me away every day. Making sure that they are having fun, they have to feel a sense of belonging, the centre needs to cater to that and ensure that every child is welcome and treated equally amongst their peers.

Interaction with their friends is the most important, the friendships that are made at Childcare can sometimes span a lifetime. It also set the children up for Big School, having the knowledge of fairness and looking after your friends is important, especially in this day and age.

We have long-serving, team members who come from our local community. Many have been with the centre over 10 years. It’s the sort of centre where everyone knows all the children, no matter which room they are in. We have been together so long it feels like we are one big family.

Every child is protected. We are very passionate about this. We have several safety procedures that we have incorporated into our centre, we believe that we go that extra mile when it comes to safety. We have outdoor checklists that we do daily, ensuring every child leaves with someone we know and that all their belongings are collected, messages have been passed on, soiled clothing collected and incident reports signed. Once this is all ticked off the child is crossed off the list to show they have left the building.

Always being there for them, listening and having a great team that can answer questions when I’m not here. Communicating through Xplor and email, responding quickly to concerns - not that we have many of those.

We have done date nights, Women in Business nights (sponsored by Breast Screen Australia), raffles for parents that are having a hard time with health, support with pick up and drop off times, morning tea packs to take in the morning, half yearly breakfast bars, Mother’s Day morning tea, Grand Parents invited to the centre for special events like gardening days, Father’s day breakfast, Family days, End of year performance night and Leaving Ceremonies.

The enrolment team do a wonderful job getting all the paperwork side of things completed, I just love to give the parents a great tour, a genuine tour where they can come in any time and see us as we are. When the parents come for a visit at our centre every staff member will greet them, tour the rooms and yards and give them all the information they need about the centre.

We also have a parent pack that has a team meet, showing all the educators, their qualifications and when they started with the centre- this is a great resource for our centre as our educators have been her a long time.
